Term 2 is almost upon us and will be another busy one with the Science and Technology Fair testing out the time management and inquiry skills of all students.
Science Fair.....for many these two words will bring on some stress and worry, The Science and Technology Fair is designed to have students using their fantastic minds to explore and try to explain something about the world we live in or to invent something that might just make something we do a little easier... I will be giving guidance and support especially in terms of organisation and time management throughout the term to ensure everyone is on track and doesn't end up running out of time/doing an all weekend effort the week before things are due! - More info on Science Fair will be with students at the start of term 2! Hey everyone, I hope you are all having a good break and doing a few things you enjoy as well as treating your parents and siblings well! I am enjoying the break and have taken Oscar our 4 year old up to Warbirds over Wanaka which he loved as he is right into aeroplanes while Cherie held the fort at home with little Charlie and Harry I have been enjoying spending time with all three of our boys they are full on and lots of fun! I am just back from a weekend in Wanaka again where I competed in the Contact Epic MTB race - a 120km ish ride to the head of lake Hawea and back - It was pretty Epic alright - I took me 7hrs and 24min and along the way I stopped 2 times to load up on food and once to help another man and pull out some "MacGyver" tricks to fix his bike for him (I'm sure most of you won't even know who he is, but your parents should!) There is a small blip of video from the scenery in the ride from my phone below. Anyway I would love to hear how you are all getting on over the break - leave a comment below and let us know of anything you have done of interest or just leave a message to say 'Hi'. I will be sorting out some of our term 2 work this week and will post a few helpful hints in getting ideas underway for the Science Fair here in the next couple of days... I hope everyone is well, see you in a week - Mr S. Makayla had her Grandmother along to school on Monday with her Guide Dog 'Pai' - It was great to have Makayla asking some great questions along with other students to Sue. Sue spend about an hour discussing and answering questions about how her eye condition and blindness has shaped who she is and how she lives her life. Pai loved the attention from all the students! Thanks to Sue for coming along and talking with us, well done for organising this Makayla On Sunday 30th March Ollie won the Otago Schools Orienteering Champs (intermediate section) at Seacliff, Beating his close rival by seconds. He also got second in the School summer series which took place over 5 events this in Term 1. Great results here Ollie, thanks for sharing your successes with the class today! Room 4 were put through their paces in the first fitness test for the year.... Everyone pushed their bodies to the limit! Check out the action video below. We got dropped off down at the Lake in Waihola for rafting. I couldn't wait until we started! First Mr Sloan has us find some things that we will need to help us when we are racing. All of the girls were working hard. We tied the ropes, wood and tyres together. We said who would be going in the water to race. Mr Sloan said time was up and we got a chance to see if would float. We got into the water and Go!! We were off the boys were in the lead but they fell off, now the girls were winning we got up on the bank. Yes! the girls won it was so much fun. I hope that everyone enjoyed seeing their children arrive home from camp yesterday. There have been some very sleepy and suitably exhausted students here today! Camp was a great success, we had perfect weather, fantastic helpers and most importantly an amazing group of students. Everyone was enthusiastic and motivated to make the most of everything that we did at camp. Although the camp was only two nights and three days we packed lots into it so there should be lots of memorable stories of camp activities and adventures to share with you all at home. If I didn't get a change to thank you face to face at the end of the day/camp please accept this as a big thank you to all of you for you inputs for camp whether it was helping with transport to or from camp and or helping out with activities during the time at camp. Without the help and support the camp would not have been able to operate in the way that it did. Over the next week we will be carrying out some follow up work relating to camp and students will have some writing, videos and photo stories to share via our class page so be sure to check in there to see some of the action from camp in the next few days/week. There are a few pieces of misplaced clothing and gear we will do our best to reunite this gear with owners of it asap! Next Monday to Wednesday are our parent interviews, this is a great opportunity to discuss how things are going for your child and to set some goals and make plans for a successful continuation of the school year. If you haven't had a chance to make an online booking there is a link and code to this on the font page of the school website at the moment www.balmacewen.school.nz where you can make a time through the online booking site. I look forward to chatting with you all next week. As always if you have any questions or concerns feel free to flick me an email, or pop into the class. Kind regards Andrew |
